The foundation Pathena was founded three years ago in Rotterdam to help develop chess talents. By means of an annual invitation tournament and a multitude of other activities, they try to offer the youth every opportunity. The organization of the first Basamrotoernooi herein was a first step, among others followed by two very successful editions of the NK youth and the successful organization of a round of the TATA steel tournament at the beginning of this year.

Meanwhile Pathena has launched its own Academy for training and counseling, to guide the youth players optimally. Virtually all participants in the Pathena team will participate.

The Pathena team was in the first edition of the tournament Basamro close to the final victory, but had to acknowledge the superiority of the team from Murmansk.

Last year the team was keen to rectify this, also because of the fantastic atmosphere and the great experience we succeeded as a team to rise above ourselves and claimed the final victory.

The team this year has been altered in some places, but is no less keen to defend the Pathena honor. Led by FM Harold van Dijk and assistant coach Peter Ypma we will give it our best to keep the cup in Rotterdam.

This will be done with the following players:

Marijn den Hartog, born in 2000, shared 1st to the last Dutch Youth Championships and thereby earned the right to participate in the Youth European Championships in Croatia. He is a solid value in the team of Pathena in the highest class of the national senior competition.

Joris Kokje, born in 2001, became 2nd in the NK youth in the C category. In 2014 he took part in the European Youth Championships in Bulgaria and in Croatia in 2015.

Bart Dubbeldam, born in 2000, has undergone a rapid development and is well on his way to reach the national top. He was the highest finishing youth player in the personal championship for seniors in Rotterdam. He is a regular player in the first chessteam of Krimpen aan de IJssel.

Arne Pols, born in 2000 is a solid player in the first chessteam of Krimpen aan de IJssel. Including in the personal championship for seniors in Rotterdam he showed he can beat many senior players.

Kevin Nguyen, born in 2001, is rated No. 6 in the Netherlands in the C category. Since 2015 he is a regular player of the first team of Messemaker 1847 in the 2nd division of the Dutch Federation competition and a very active and dangerous participant in numerous senior tournaments.

Lola the Dunnen, born in 1999, was second in Dutch championship for girls in the category up to 20 years. She represented the Netherlands at the European Youth Championship recently held in Croatia.

Alexander Janse, born in 2001, was 3rd at the NK youth in 2014 and has been regular player of the first chessteam of Krimpen aan de IJssel.

Jorik Klein, born in 2001, has strongly developed as a youth player and has now penetrated the national sub-top in his age category. He plays external for chessclub Sliedrecht.

Sebastiaan Janse, born in 2003, made a huge improvement last year. The first step was a very creditable third place in the D category on the NK youth. In several senior tournaments, however, he proved that he is a very dangerous attacking player and he managed to keep all of several FM’s a draw. Recently, he still proved himself as top scorer (with 4.5 out of 5) in the match against Belgium.

Luke Nguyen, born in 2004, became in 2013 Dutch youth champion in the category up to 9 years, last year he shared 3rd in the category up to 12 years. With his current FIDE rating of 1810 he is on paper the strongest competitor on the lower boards.
